Marta Horodniczy - mother and artist.

Updated: Jun 9, 2021

Our beautiful Marta Horodniczy is a Polish artist, wife and mother that recently moved to Madeira. Few weeks ago, with the opening of our café, we organized Marta’s exhibition (which you are welcome to visit) that at the same time gives calm, Madeiran, feminine energy to our café. We spoke with Marta about how she likes the island and what serves as an inspiration for her.

You recently moved to Madeira, how do you like it so far?

Yes, I moved here 11 months ago, and I definitely want to stay. For me, Madeira has everything what I need. A lot of plants, flowers, mountains and the ocean, but also cities with urban supplies. I can choose how I spend my free time. I've met a lot of very friendly people from different countries as well. Here, I never feel like being isolated, despite the fact that I'm not good in foreign languages. On Madeira is a bit hard to find a job, and I'm glad that I can earn money in another way.

Is Madeira serving you as an inspiration? If so, what exactly?

For me, the strongest inspiration from Madeira are the people. I’m an introvert, but most people from here are extroverts, and also they help me to build my art-world again, here, in the new place.

Have you been working on something new lately? If yes, can you tell us a little about your inspiration…

Lately I'm developing my graphics knowledge and I have an order for painting landscapes and again, people are my inspiration, because they don't want ready paintings, they have their own ideas which I try to create, with my hands, into art. I'm part of their lives, what they like, what they admire... Of course they like my style and that’s why they choose me to create something. However, the most important thing in this kind of artwork is trust.

Is it hard to be a mother and artist at the same time? How do you find time for both?

Frankly speaking – I don’t know how I manage this 😊 My child helps me choose what’s important for me, set limits and don’t be selfish. However, I feel it’s hard being an artist and a mother at the same time. Also, I want her mom to be an example and show her that work is actually taking care of yourself, be independent, and have the power to do things, no matter where you are.

Do you maybe have any advice to share with us, especially for the artists?

The only way to search deeply in your soul is by being an honest, hardworking and friendly human. Also set limits, not only to others, but first of all have your own limits.
