Molding Creativity: A Journey Through Clay with Nathan Slate

Updated: Aug 8, 2023

On Saturday, the 1st of April we had a unique and hands-on experience at the Art Center Caravel on Madeira Island. This time, we had the opportunity to attend a clay workshop led by the well-known and talented artist, Nathan Slate. He presented and taught his participants how to work with clay and create creative, lovely and functional pieces.

Nathan practices art as escapism and he focuses on ceramics and unique firing/glazing techniques, creating one-of-a-kind pieces. He is well-known for his organic forms, and he encouraged participants to use such forms in their pieces. This approach allowed participants to not only create functional pieces but also express their artistic vision in unique ways.

The workshop was open to international participants, and over 15 people had the great opportunity to learn about different techniques and tools used in working with clay. During the workshop, participants learned about cutting the clay, using both white and black clay, modeling the clay, but also they learned how to make it durable and stable, and ways to express themselves with their hands.

After the creative process, the pieces created during the workshop were left at the center so they could properly dry before putting them in the oven. When they will be completely ready, they can be taken home as a souvenir and reminder of the whole experience. The knowledge gained during the workshop can also be used by participants wherever they are, allowing them to continue working with clay and creating both beautiful and useful pieces.

Whether you are an experienced artist or a beginner, the clay workshop is a great opportunity to learn new skills and express your creativity. And we promise to have many more workshops like this. Needless to say, the Art Center Caravel is a perfect place to learn about art and creativity on Madeira Island. So, stay tuned.
