On December 12th and 13th, Matera, Italy, hosted the launch of Craftwork 4.0 All, a groundbreaking four-year initiative aimed at supporting traditional craftsmanship and empowering emerging artisans across Europe. Representing Portugal, our association, Artem, is thrilled to be part of this ambitious project that combines innovation with heritage.
Craftwork 4.0 All: A European Platform for Emerging Artisans
The project, coordinated by Materahub and funded by the European Creative Europe Program, brings together 12 organisations from across Europe, including Portugal, Italy, Sweden, Greece, and beyond. Together, we are creating Europe’s first platform dedicated entirely to promoting historical and artistic craftsmanship while fostering international collaboration.
The platform will support artisans working in ceramics, embroidery, knitting, sewing, wool crafting, traditional techniques, and other forms of craftsmanship. It aims to break geographical and cultural barriers, providing artisans with tools, connections, and opportunities to thrive.
Opportunities for Artisans
Over the next four years, Craftwork 4.0 All will offer a wide range of opportunities for emerging artisans:
Art Residencies: Mobility programs to support creative exchange.
Craft Festivals: Celebrating craftsmanship and showcasing talent.
Craft Labs: On-site and online workshops focused on skill-building and innovation.
Training Programs: Personal and collaborative learning experiences tailored to artisans’ needs.
Networking Opportunities: Events and platforms for artisans to connect and collaborate.
These initiatives are designed not only to enhance artisans’ skills but also to promote sustainable job creation and economic growth in local communities.
ARTE.M and Portugal’s Role
As the Portuguese representative, ARTE.M will work to ensure that t Portuguese techniques classic and modern approaches—such as ceramics, embroidery, wool crafting etc —are showcased and integrated into the European dialogue. Our focus is on bridging the gap between heritage and modernity, while also fostering collaboration among artisans and cultural organisations.
Open Call for Emerging Crafters
We are excited to announce the launch of an Open Call for emerging crafters from Portugal! Crafting a Brighter Future
At its core, Craftwork 4.0 All is about more than just preserving traditions; it’s about empowering artisans to lead the way in cultural, social, and economic development. By bringing craftsmanship to the forefront of Europe’s creative industries, this project highlights the value of art in addressing social challenges and fostering innovation.
